The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will be in three phases.

The exercise according to INEC resumes on Monday, August 18, 2025 ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC says it has identified about 811 registration centres spread across all states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure the process is accessible to millions of eligible Nigerians.

Unlike previous cycles, this registration period will combine both online and in-person opportunities. From August 18, citizens can begin pre-registering via the commission’s dedicated portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org, ahead of physical registration, which starts on August 25.

The commission said “Physical registration will be conducted at local government area offices and designated ward centres nationwide, running Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.”

The CVR timeline is as follows:

Phase One: August 18 – December 10, 2025; register display: December 15–21, 2025

Phase Two: January 5 – April 17, 2026; register display: April 20–26, 2026.

Phase Three: May 4 – August 17, 2026; register display: August 24–30, 2026

The voter register will be periodically displayed after each phase for claims and objections, giving citizens the opportunity to verify their details and raise any concerns.

INEC recently completed a similar registration drive in Anambra State ahead of its governorship election, but this new nationwide exercise offers another opportunity for unregistered voters across the country, including those who missed the state-specific process, to participate.

INEC’s message is clear: voter registration is the first step in securing electoral representation. Missing it means sitting out of the national decision-making process for the next four years.

Meanwhile, INEC Chair, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stressed that the initiative is not just an administrative routine but a cornerstone of the electoral process.

“Your vote begins with your registration. This is your chance to have a voice in shaping the future.”
