The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), boss Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called for calm following the circulation of a disturbing video online showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and allegedly demanding the deportation of Nigerians from Ghana.
In a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols NIDCOM, on Tuesday, Dabiri-Erewa condemned the sweeping generalizations against Nigerians, emphasizing that labeling an entire nationality as criminals is not only unfair but also dangerous.
She stated that “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves. The few who break the law should be isolated and face the appropriate sanctions,”.
The NIDCOM boss stressed that Ghana and Nigeria share a deep historical and regional bond as “Siamese twins,” and should continue to uphold the spirit of ECOWAS unity and peaceful coexistence.
Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to disregard unverified videos and rumors, noting that no credible evidence supports those claims.
“At all costs, we must avoid any form of reprisal attacks. The situation is under control and being addressed through diplomatic channels,” she said.
She also revealed that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is already engaging with Ghanaian authorities to de-escalate the situation.
She also commended the efforts of both Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions in managing the tension swiftly and professionally.
Dabiri-Erewa further appealed to all parties to refrain from inciteful comments or actions that could escalate tensions between the two West African nations.
“Let us not allow isolated incidents to damage the long-standing relationship between our peoples,” she said.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerians abroad, while urging community leaders in Ghana to help maintain peace and order.
