The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has wrapped up its voter registration exercise in Anambra State with a record breaking 168,187 new voters added to the voter register in just two weeks, the highest figure ever recorded in the state since 2017.

This is as the Commission said the number of groups seeking to be registered as political parties have hit 144.

This was revealed in a press release issued on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the end of the Commission’s regular weekly meeting.

The release was signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and chairman Information and Voter Education Committee.

Olumekun said the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) was extended to July 20 after appeals from residents.

He adeed that the strong turnout, especially among young people and women, reflects growing political awareness ahead of the November 2025 governorship election.

According to INEC 58% of new voters are female, 54% are young people aged 18–34, Most are business owners (37%) and students (26%)

INEC also recorded over 500 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) new registrants, a strong sign of inclusive participation.

The commission said From July 26 to August 1, the preliminary list of new voters will be displayed across all 326 wards in Anambra State for the public to verify, correct errors, or raise objections.

After final verification and biometric screening, the new names will be officially added to the voter register.

INEC promises that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be ready in time and urges voters to stay alert for the collection schedule.

INEC also revealed that ten new groups applied to be registered as political parties just this week alone.

This bribgs to 144 associations that have expressed interest in becoming political parties.

The commission stressed that a brand-new online portal, built by INEC’s tech team, is now in place to handle these applications smoothly and securely.

The names, logos, addresses, and leaders of the applicants have been published online for transparency, and the Commission says it’s now reviewing which of them meet the requirements to move forward.

INEC assures Nigerians that more updates will be shared soon as the countdown to elections continues.
