The Nigeria Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Wednesday praised the People’s Liberation Army of China for its legacy in safeguarding China’s sovereignty and promoting global peace.
Matawalle spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at the 98th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China.
Speaking at the commemorative event, Matawalle said “This anniversary is not only a celebration of the PLA’s strength but a reflection of China’s remarkable journey in supporting international development and security,”.
Matawalle highlighted the strategic partnership between Nigeria and China, particularly in defence and security cooperation.
He noted that the PLA has been a “reliable partner” in Nigeria’s efforts to combat national security threats, including terrorism, maritime insecurity, and regional instability.
“China has supported Nigeria through capacity building, training, technology transfer, and the supply of critical military hardware,” he said, adding that the collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s current defence transformation agenda.
The minister emphasized the importance of partnerships built on trust, mutual respect, and shared goals, especially in an increasingly complex global security environment.
He commended China’s support for Africa’s peace and security initiatives and acknowledged the PLA’s role in international peacekeeping, humanitarian efforts, and regional stability, particularly through platforms like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative.
Matawalle reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its defence relationship with China.
