The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Thursday announced that 96,085 new voters registered in the first nine days of commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State.

The exercise which was to close on 17 July 2025 has now been extended by three days, INEC said.

National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee disclosed this in a statement after the Thursday’s INEC regular weekly meeting.
Okumekun said the CVR will now end on Sunday 20 July 2025.

The Commission said the decision to extend the exercise was as a result of appeals from residents.

According to INEC, the registration exercise has so far recorded a strong turnout, with 96,085 new voters registered in the first nine days.

An average of over 10,600 voters registered daily across all 326 centres in the state.

Additionally, 12,595 voters applied for transfers, while 7,061 requested updates or replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Preliminary figures indicate that 58% of new registrants are female, and over 52% are young people between the ages of 18 and 34.

INEC will display the preliminary voters’ register for public review, allowing for claims and objections as required by law.

A further cleanup of the data will be conducted using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), and a full demographic breakdown of registrants will be published in due course.

The Commission also revealed it has received five additional letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties.

This brings the total number of applications to 134. Details of these new associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, have been published on INEC’s website and other platforms.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and keeping the public informed as preparations for the Anambra governorship election continue.
