The Mokwa flooding community in Niger State Nigeria, including Kwoyi in Abuja, received fifteen Biosand Water Filters to provide them with safe drinking water.

It is meant to augment the effort of the Federal, State, and Local Governments as well as different non governmental agencies.

The gesture was made possible by Coastal and Marine Development Initiative (CMADI) in collaboration with +1 Global Health/Roddenberry, PIND, and YALI Network, Abuja

.

It would be recalled that the devasting flood which occurred on May 29, 2025, had over 200 confirmed dead , with over 700 still missing and more than 3,000 people displaced, many taking shelter with relatives or in temporary IDP camps with no sources of safe drinkable water.
On the other hand, the Kwoyi community in Abuja lacks basic amenities like electricity and good roads, and safe drinking water. It is a hard to reach area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

.

Coastal and Marine Areas Development Initiative (CMADI), in partnership with YALI Network, Abuja, donated 3 biosand water filters to kwoyi community.

CMADI team led by Henry A. Erikowa and Esther Nwani installed the filters in the community.

For the Mokwa flood victims in Niger State, 12 biosand water filters were received by His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, Etsu Nupe, Chairman, Nigeria State Council of Traditional rulers .

In the same vein, Mr Henry Erikowa led the team to install all the Biosand Water filters in different designated areas at Bida and Mokwa.
Mrs Tureki, Officer, National Emergency Management Authority, in charge of the Mokwa IDP camp, on hand to receive the filters.

All these efforts are in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.
These initiatives by CMADI
is geared at argumenting the federal government’s allocated N2 billion for reconstruction and rehabilitation of homes devastated by the flood as well as that of Niger State government allocated N2 billion for reconstruction and rehabilitation of homes devastated by the flood . The State also pledged N8 billion for road reconstruction and N1 billion for victim support.
However, there are still challenges and concerns of poor drainage systems, and inadequate urban planning has been identified as contributing factors to the flooding.

Many residents have also expressed frustration with the slow pace of relief efforts and concerns about the distribution of aid
