The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Wednesday debunked the report making the rounds that it has registered two new political parties—the “Independent Democrats” and the “Peoples Democratic Movement.”
INEC noted that both parties were originally registered in August 2013 but were deregistered in February 2020 under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution.
In a statement posted on its official X account, INEC said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission has not registered any new political party.
“The number of registered political parties in Nigeria remains 19. Nothing has been added,” the statement read in part.
The commission therefore urged the general public to disregard the said report.
