Alleged phone theft: UNICAL expels one

The University of Calabar, has announced the expulsion of one Victory Chuwuemeka, of the Department of Public Health, for an alleged case of phone theft during the 2023/2024 academic session.

A statement dated 14th May 2025, marked UC/REG/ DISC/45A and signed by the Registrar of the institution, Dr. Chukwuka Icha, was obtained by newsmen in Calabar, the Cross River capital.

According to the statement, “The Vice Chancellor has received the report of the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) which investigated an alleged case of phone theft during the 2023/2024 academic session.”

It added that, “arising from the above, Senate has approved the recommendation of Senate Students Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) that you be expelled from the University for phone theft,” directing also that, “you are hereby expelled from the University of Calabar with effect from 2023/2024 academic session.”

The statement further called on the Provost, College of Medical Science; Head, Department of Medicine and Surgery as well as the Chief Security Officer to ensure full compliance with the directive.

When contacted for clarity on the statement, UNICAL Information Officer, Eyo Offiong said, “I never saw this before the commencement of my ill-health, I don’t know if such a memo has reached my office in my absence.”

Pressed further for enquiries given the date of the release which was May 14, 2025, if he (Information Officer) had commenced his absence for ill-health before then, he told this reporter that, “You may have seen it, my colleagues in the office are yet to receive a copy,” adding “until I receive a copy formally from the office of the Registrar, I have nothing to say for now.”
