The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursdays refuted media reports suggesting it has recognised specific individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP).
In a statement, INEC said it was still studying the Supreme Court judgment.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, therefore clarified that the Commission was yet to make any decision regarding the ongoing leadership disagreements within the Labour Party.
Oyekanmi, emphasised that as a law-abiding institution, the commission is currently carefully reviewing the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public “in due course.”
INEC stressed that the names of Labour Party National Officers were previously uploaded to its website following a court order unrelated to the recent Supreme Court judgment. Similarly, the commission stated that the name of the PDP National Secretary on the website had neither been removed nor reinstated.
INEC described as “false and misleading” reports circulating in the media.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in internal disputes regarding its leadership structure, and the Supreme Court’s recent judgment is expected to have implications for the resolution of these disagreements.
INEC’s cautious approach indicates its commitment to adhering to legal processes before making any official pronouncements on the matter.
