The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed sorrow over the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

This was disclosed In a condolence message issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nigeria government described the late pontiff as a “global moral leader” whose papacy embodied humility, compassion, and a tireless pursuit of justice and peace.

Nigeria also acknowledged the profound impact Pope Francis had on millions around the world — particularly his advocacy for the poor, displaced, and marginalized.

The statement noted that his call for interfaith harmony and solidarity resonated deeply with Nigerians, offering “a beacon of hope amid challenges.

“The Holy Father’s legacy of mercy, dialogue, and concern for humanity will endure,” said the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.”

The government highlighted Pope Francis’ historic apology in 2022 for the Church’s role in colonial injustices — a gesture Nigeria described as “a powerful example of reconciliation” that remains relevant to global conversations on justice and healing.

As a country with one of the largest Catholic populations in Africa, Nigeria said it stands in solidarity with the Vatican, the global Catholic community, and the people of Argentina — birthplace of the late pope — during this moment of mourning.

“We extend heartfelt condolences to the Catholic faithful in Nigeria and across the world,”adding that the country prays for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Pope Francis, the first pope from Latin America, led the Catholic Church from 2013 until his death, earning widespread admiration for his focus on inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and dialogue across cultures and religions.
