The Northern Nigeria Human Rights Advocates (NONIHRA) has condemned what it described as the senseless acts of violence in Plateau, Benue and Borno States which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives and immense suffering.

Bandits reportedly attacked communities in Bokkos LGA of Plateau State allegedly killing no fewer than sixty persons recently. Same attacks were also reported in Benue State while the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents resurfaced in Borno State when their bombs was detonated on Maiduguri-Damboa highway killing no fewer than eight persons and injuring many on Saturday (12/04/2025).

Coordinator of NONIHRA, Sylvester Yibis, expressed the group’s deep sadness and outrage over the recent circle of violence saying, “These senseless acts of violence are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms”.

Sylvester, in a press release sent to our Correspondent said the incidents highlight the urgent need for the Government to take concrete actions to address the underlying issues driving these conflicts.

The group therefore called on Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

The group also impressed on Government to implement transitional justice mechanisms to address the historical grievances and injustices that have contributed to the conflicts which include: Establishing truth-telling commissions to uncover the facts surrounding these incidents and provide a platform for victims to share their experiences.

It said the transitional justice mechanism should provide reparations to victims and their families to acknowledge their suffering and support their recovery while also supporting community-led reconciliation initiatives to promote healing and rebuild trust between communities.

It advocated for proactive measures to be taken by Government to prevent further violence by deploying security personnel to affected areas to protect civilians and prevent further attacks.

Other proactive measures to be taken by Government it advised, is to keep engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to promote dialogue and understanding as well as addressing the root causes of these conflicts, including poverty, inequality, and social injustice.

“We urge the Government to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens and work towards building a more just and peaceful society.

“We also call on all stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society organizations, and international partners, to support these efforts and work together towards a brighter future for all”, it appealed.

While sympathyzing with those affected, it said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured. We also commend the resilience and courage of the affected communities, who have shown remarkable strength in the face of adversity.

End.
