The Psychotherapeutic and Counseling Research Institute (PCRI) in Nigeria, has called on major stakeholders in Government, Academia, Healthcare and Civil Society groups to support the mission of PCRI by ensuring that mental health services, policy formulation and rehabilitation programs receive adequate attention to help address mental health challenges in the country.

Dr. Mohammed Audu, the Registrar/Secretary of the Institute made the call during the Maiden Matriculation, Convocation, and Investiture of Fellowship Award Ceremony held at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, with the theme: “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support as a Security Strategy to Nation Building,”

Audu said there was need for the Full Establishment of PCRI in Nigeria, hence the critical need to expand the impact of the institution is evident in the depth of research and practical interventions PCRI has developed.

The Registrar said the burden of mental health challenges, substance use disorders, workplace stress, trauma, and psychological distress in Nigeria requires a dedicated institution that will train professionals, conduct pioneering research, and advocate for policy changes at the national level.

According to him, PCRI was established with a singular vision to promote excellence in psychotherapy, counseling, mental health advocacy, and research-driven interventions that address the pressing psychological challenges in our society.

“It is in recognition of this urgent need that Hon. Usman Midal Balami, a distinguished member of the House of Representatives from Borno State, sponsored a bill for the full establishment and national recognition of the Psychotherapeutic & Counseling Research Institute (PCRI).

“This bill, which has successfully passed the first reading, marks a significant step toward solidifying PCRI’s place as a national leader in mental health education, research, and professional development.

“In a world where mental health issues continue to rise, our institution stands as a beacon of hope, equipping professionals with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding to transform lives and communities.” Dr. Audu said.

In her remarks, the President/Chairman of PCRI, Amb. Dr. Sa’adatu Adamu, said that the integral role of mental health in the fabric of national security has become increasingly evident that a nation’s strength is not solely measured by its economic prowess or military capabilities but by the mental well-being and resilience of its citizens.

Amb. Dr. Adamu maintained that Psychosocial support encompasses a range of care and assistance aimed at addressing both psychological and social needs, thereby promoting mental well-being and preventing mental health conditions.

According to her, when we prioritize mental health and provide robust psychosocial support, we lay the foundation for a society that can withstand adversities, adapt to challenges, and thrive amidst uncertainties.

However, she said by integrating such support into our national policies, we not only enhance individual resilience but also fortify the collective strength of our communities. This holistic approach is vital in mitigating the psychosocial impacts of emergencies and fostering a sense of unity and purpose among citizens.

Meanwhile, the Keynote speaker Bar. Dr. Mainasara Umar Kogo, Chairman Code of Conduct Tribunal, urged the newly inducted fellows and matriculating students to equip themselves with the desired knowledge and skills to help address mental health challenges in the country

On his part, the Chief of Defense Staff who was represented by Surgeon Commodore M.J Saliu, said mental health has a great impact on security personnel in discharging their duties for the security of lives and properties in the country.

Also, Amb. Francisco Edu Mangue, the Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea in Nigeria, called for the enactment of adequate policies that would shape the future of mental health services in national security.

The Esu of Karu HRH Parm. Luka Baba Panya, who was represented by Ubangari of Karu Elder Philip Iyakwari, congratulated the matriculating and convocation students, while he commended the Institute for the indepth research work so far.
