Environment: Royal Father appointed to Chair taskforce on ‘Gombe Goes Green’ project

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has inaugurated a 17-man Task Force for ‘Gombe Goes Green’ Project, headed by Mai Tula Dr. Abubakar Buba Atare II.

The taskforce inauguration which is another State Government’s efforts towards addressing the effects of climate change and promote healthier environment, is to among others, implement and monitor the project. The taskforce is made up of professionals, passionate about creating a greener and more sustainable Gombe State.

Inaugurating the taskforce on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, emphasised the need for urgent action to address the environmental challenges facing the State, including deforestation, desertification, gully erosion, and reduced food production due to climate change.

He highlighted that the ‘Gombe Goes Green’ project was launched to tackle these pressing issues and improve the environment, which had long been a source of concern for both the Government and citizens.

He explained that the task force’s efforts would be pivotal in reducing the negative impacts of environmental degradation, such as poverty, food insecurity, health challenges, and infrastructure damage while expressing his confidence in the team’s abilities.

Dr. Abubakar Buba Atare II, the Mai Tula and Chairman of the Task Force in his inaugural speech, noted that the ‘Gombe Goes Green’ initiative represented a holistic approach to addressing climate change and fostering socioeconomic development in the State.

He outlined the Task Force’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in carrying out the project while also emphasising the importance of collaboration with local communities, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to ensure success of the initiative.

According to him, the project aims to prioritise afforestation, ecological balance, and the creation of green jobs adding that, activities to be carried out includes advocacy and educational campaigns to raise awareness and encourage active participation in preserving the environment by the public.

“With this new initiative, Gombe State aims to become a model for environmental sustainability in Nigeria, creating a greener, more prosperous future for generations to come.” The Chairman of the Task Force said.

The Chairperson of the Shongom Local Government Area, Hajiya Fatima Binta Bello who spoke on behalf of her colleagues from Gombe South Senatorial District, lauded the initiative of the Governor and called on the people to support the gigantic and significant initiative for the protection of the environment.
