Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of a former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has regained freedom from the United Kingdom’s prison.
The news of her release set her family house in the Mpu community of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State in jubilation.
Beatrice and her husband were convicted for charges of organ harvesting and trafficking in May 2023.
The couple had attempted to buy the kidney of a young Nigerian boy to make him a donor to their daughter Sophia.
Beatrice, Ike, and one Obinna Obeta, a medical doctor, were sentenced to prison by a UK court for their involvement in organ harvesting – with the husband bagging 10 years and Beatrice six years, despite pleading poor health in court.
Chief Alex Ogbonnia, the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed joy over the release.
“I want to thank God for His grace upon Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife. It’s jubilation galore across Enugu State because they used their opportunities to touch lives, showcasing the quality they possess,” Ogbonnia stated.
He continued: “The husband, in particular, represented the people of Enugu West immeasurably and impacted Enugu State as a whole. We pray that in no distant time, he will return to Nigeria to continue his good work.”
Former national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and ex-governor of Enugu State, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo also described Mrs. Ekweremadu’s freedom as a significant relief for her family and the entire Southeast East region.
He noted that her return to Nigeria would also help alleviate the loneliness her children endured during her incarceration.
