The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) has urged governments at all levels to support civil society organisations in the campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through cultural reorientation.
Ms. Munachi Okoro, Head of Communication and Knowledge Management at PPDC, made the call during a debate competition organised by the centre for secondary school students in Abuja on Tuesday.
The debate topic was “Culture: An Enabler of Gender-Based Violence.”
Okoro emphasised the need for a holistic approach to end gender-based violence, citing culture as a significant contributor to its propagation, particularly in rural areas.
She advocated for the removal of harmful cultural practices that affected women and girls, ensuring they live freely without fear of violence.
“The primary target audience for this event is students, with the goal of educating the future generation about gender issues and violence.
“The initiative aims to educate young people on gender-based violence and its cultural roots.
“PPDC is advocating for governments and other institutions to reorient the public against culturally oriented gender-based violence.”
Ms. Precious Adigwe, Programme Officer for Gender Mainstreaming and Inclusion at PPDC, noted that gender-based violence affected every community, leaving lasting scars on individuals and societies.
She stressed the need for collective efforts to eradicate gender-based violence and its roots, encouraging young boys to use their voices to drive change.
Akomprema Michelle, a debate participant from Our Unique Children Academy, appreciated the organisers for the opportunity and promised to share the knowledge gained to improve awareness and the economy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the schools that participated in the debate included Aquila British International School, Government Secondary School Gosa, and Our Unique Children Academy.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is observed annually from November 25 to December 10, aiming to raise awareness and combat all forms of gender-based violence. (NAN)
