Jela Development Initiative (JDI) a non-profit organisation has equipped 114 residents of the Federal Capital Territory with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid skills to respond to emergencies and save lives.

The one-day practical workshop on basic CPR and first aid was organised by JDI in collaboration with the Lighthouse Initiative for Societal Impact and Development, Red Cross Nigeria and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.

Ms Angela Omeiza Founder of JDI emphasised the importance of having trained citizens who can act quickly in emergencies before professional help arrives.

“We want to ensure that our community is well trained in the aspect of CPR and first aid; why because we have consistently seen people going through various kinds of emergencies with nobody around to help them.

“Sometimes there are people around them, but they don’t know what to do in that situation. So we saw the need to invite different organisations, businesses, from all works to get the skills needed and replicate it for others too.”

Also speaking, Mr Shola Adesoye, Founder of Lighthouse Initiative said that CPR and first aid increases chances of surviving for victims, especially when the heart stops beating or cannot circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs.

Ms Loretta Laoye, a participant commended the group for the training which she said had equipped her to respond to emergencies and save lives.

“I’ve always wanted to know how to help in emergencies, so, It’s empowering to feel prepared for anything that might happen. You never know when these skills could be needed.”

Similarly, Patrick Olawale said that the training provided him with basic first aid skills to respond effectively to various emergency situations like choking incidents, drowning, electruding, internal bleeding to minor injuries.

Newsspecng.com reports that participants received free medical checkups, including blood pressure, blood sugar, hepatitis, and rapid HIV tests.
