Maiden edition of a-42 kilometre race that will commence from Ikom through Ajasor and terminate at Agbokim, in Cross River State, tagged ‘Agbokim Falls Green Marathon’ has been scheduled to hold on November 23, 2024.
Fielding questions from newsmen in Calabar, Tuesday, Secretary of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), of the race, Mr. Sylva Bogbo, disclosed that the event is billed for interested adult Nigerian males and females.
Bogbo disclosed that the sales of participation forms is ongoing at the Ministry of Sports Development headquarters in Calabar, as well as, the Ogoja, Ikom and Etung councils headquarters respectively, while those outside the State can access the form via the website, www.agbokimfallsgreenmarathon.com.
He informed that the Cross River State government through the Sports Development Ministry, had acquired 1000 forms for interested Cross Riverians on ‘first come, first serve basis.’
The LOC Scribe also revealed that the Marathon race will have two segments made up of the general and local categories with different prizes attached for winners.
“For the general category, the winner will cart home N2m, while the first and second runner up would smile home with N1m and N750,000 respectively,” he said, adding that, “winners for the fourth, fifth and sixth positions would get N500,000, N400,000 and-N300,000 respectively, among others,” he said.
The statement added that for the local category, the winner will get N500,000 while the first and second runner up would bag N300,000 and N200,000 respectively, including consolation prizes.
“The Agbokim-Falls Green Marathon is a sport-turning tourism event that would market and promote the Agbokim Falls for global appeal and patronage.
“This initiative highlights the need for a shared responsibility, to continually protect and build the required infrastructure, to complement the idyllic environmental setting of nature’s gifting to humanity, located at Etung local government area of Cross River State,” Bogbo maintained.
The maiden Marathon race is billed to hold in Agbokim village, Etung local government area.
