UNGA: Shettima departs Abuja for US

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for the United States to attend the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), at the behest of President Bola Tinubu.

Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications (Office of The Vice President), made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

NAN reports that Tinubu had earlier directed the Vice-President to lead the Nigerian delegation to the high-level global forum.

This, according to the statement will enable the President to focuse on addressing pressing domestic issues, including the recent devastating flood disaster.

Nkwocha said during the session Shettima would deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in key meetings on the sidelines of the event, and engage in bilateral meetings.

He said that the high-level general debate themed, “Leaving no one behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” will take place from Sept. 24 to Sept. 28. (NAN)

NAN pledges support for ECN’s efficient energy campaign

The Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Malam Ali M. Ali, has assured the Energy Commission of Nigeria of the agency’s commitment to publicise its energy consumption efficiency project.

Ali said this when a delegation from the Nigeria Sustainable Cooling Project (NSCP) led by Dr Shehu Mustafa, Project Director, paid a courtesy call on the agency in Abuja.

The visit was to solicit the agency’s partnership to sensitise the public to the organisation’s project tagged “Scaling Up Energy-Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria”.

“You could not have come to a better medium for partnership and we are representing everything in all the senatorial district and we will take the message to the grassroot.

“Your campaign on energy consumption efficiency will cost a lot of resources and the agency is a public medium, we are here to give you public service.

“We will give you maximum publicity at little or no cost partnering with us.

”We will cover all your activities so long as we are invited, and if need be, deploy a permanent reporter to report your activities including our multimedia.”

The MD said over the years people are becoming more energy smart nationwide by making conversion from petro to gasoline.

Ali who said energy consumption has cost a lot on the populace, assured of the organisation’s full participation in the campaign at the grassroots.

He tasked NSCP on interagency collaboration with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to assist in public enlightenment.

According to him, such partnership will ensure behavioural change like the current insecurity which has completely changed people’s behaviours even in FCT.

Earlier, Mustafa using the Air Conditioning system, said old ACs consumed more energy when compared to current energy efficient ones.

Earlier, Mustafa said Scaling Up Energy-Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria’s project is funded by the Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC) and supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

According to him, the project aims to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient ACs, which will not only reduce electricity bills but also optimise the grid system and lessen pressure on transformers.

Mustapha identified NAN as the ideal partner for spreading the important message to both rural and urban populations.
