Cross River governor, Prince Bassey Otu, has condole with the government and people of Borno, over the recent flood disaster in the area which claimed lives and properties, leaving scores of people displaced.
The overflow of the primary source of the Alau dam in Borno is said to have brought the city of Maiduguri underwater.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, quoted Otu as saying, “we understand the pain and trauma that this disaster has caused, and we are committed to providing support in any way we can.
“As a fellow state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we understand the importance of standing together in times of crisis, hence the government of Cross River stands in unity with the affected families and communities.
“We appreciate and commend the federal government’s swift response to provide first aid while dispatching relief materials as immediate intervention to the affected communities,” the statement read.
He urged the government of Borno to collaborate and work with relevant authorities in order to implement long-term solutions aimed at preventing such disasters in the future.
Continuing, Otu remarked that the government and people of Cross River understand the devastating effects of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness including risk reduction measures, urging well meaning citizens and relevant organisations to join hands with the federal government in supporting the flood victims.
Otu also sued for donations, contributions, and any assistance towards rebuilding the affected communities and offering a new lease of life to the affected individuals.
The governor who noted that Cross River stands with Borno in her renewed efforts to restore normalcy and rebuild their homes also argued that the people of Borno are resilient and united, hence he has not doubt that the Borno government will overcome the challenge.
Otu also pitied the Shehu of Borno, Umar Ibn Garba El-Kanemi, whose palace was also taken over by the flood.
His words, “We are confident, that with your determination and the support of the entire nation, you will emerge stronger from this disaster, for together, we can overcome any adversity.”
