The Gombe State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has drawn the attention of the State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on the need to adopt a more moderate and considerate tone in public statements.

While addressing representatives of market traders associations, Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on the need to shelve the end bad governance protest just before it started, Governor Inuwa said his Government cannot be able to pay the N70,000 minimum wage as agreed by the Federal Government.

The Governor’s rejection on the implementation of the new minimum wage did not go down well with many, especially civil servants.

But rising from it’s extra ordinary general meeting to address the growing concerns among the residents of the State, NBA said the Governor’s statement led to increased tension and unrest, particularly concerning the refusal to implement the new minimum wage and the threats regarding participation in the just concluded protest among others.

The NBA issued a Communiqué signed by it’s Chairman, Benjamin Sati Esq, titled “APPEAL FOR MODERATION BY PUBLIC OFFICERS IN PUBLIC STATEMENTS TO FOSTER STABILITY IN GOMBE STATE.

In the communiqué, NBA expressed it’s concern over public discontent on the Governor’s decision not to pay the approved minimum wage which coincided with the commencement of nationwide end bad governance protest.

According to the NBA, that was what understandably caused frustration and disappointment among the residents of Gombe State adding that the subsequent public protests was a testament to the heightened sensitivity around the issue.

On the Governor’s use of words and it’s impacts on peace and stability NBA said, “Leadership requires not only making tough decisions but also communicating those decisions with empathy and respect.

“Recent statements attributed to His Excellency have been perceived as dismissive and inflammatory, exacerbating public discontent.

“The current climate of unrest poses a significant threat to the peace and stability of Gombe State. As stakeholders in the state’s welfare, we are keenly aware of the need for calm and measured communication from our leaders”, the communiqué stressed.

While appealing to the Governor to adopt a more moderate and considerate tone in public statement, it said communications from the Governor’s office reflect an understanding of the residents’ concerns and a commitment to addressing them constructively.

“We urge the Governor to engage in open dialogue with the residents, labor unions, and other stakeholders to find amicable solutions to the wage dispute and other pressing issues. This approach will help build trust and foster a cooperative atmosphere.

“As the highest representative of the state, the Governor’s conduct and words set the tone for the entire administration. We encourage His Excellency to lead by example, demonstrating patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of all Gombe State residents.

“The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe Branch, is committed to supporting the Government in its efforts to ensure the prosperity and stability of our state.

“We believe that through measured and thoughtful communication, His Excellency can help bridge the gap between the Government and the people, fostering a more harmonious and productive relationship.

“We remain hopeful that His Excellency will consider our appeal in the spirit of mutual respect and shared commitment to the betterment of Gombe State”, the NBA appealed.
