Edo/Ondo: Youth constitue over 80% of newly registered voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Monday 5 August 2024 released the figures of the newly registered voters in Edo, with youth constituting 80%.

According to INEC in a statement by its National Commissioner amd Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, there were total of 61,684 male representing 52.75% and 57,522 female representing 48.25%.

This brings to 119,206 newly eligible voters added to the state’s voter register.

Further breakdown of the newly registered voters along occupation, shows that students have the highest registrants with 51,035 representing 42.81%, followed by those in business with 27, 464 representing 23.03%.
Those into farming and fishing constituted 10.32% of newly registered voters with 12, 298.

Also, artisan has 8, 423 representing 7.07% while 4,906 of the newly registrants are into trading representing 4.12%. House wife recorded 1,119 new registrants representing 1.25%; while Civil Servants added 1,119 representing 0.94%.

Also, public servants contributed 739 representing 0.62% to the register and eligible voters in other professions are q1,737 representing 9.84%.

The Commission, which also did analysis of newly registered voters alongside age reveals that youth of age 18-35 recorded 97,723, representing 81.98%.

People in the middle age between (age 36-49) recorded 15,409 representing 12 93% while those in the category of elderly between (age 50-69) had 5,505 representing 4.62%.

The old which is from age 70+ has 569 persons on the voter register, representing 0.48%.

The People with Disabilities recorded 606 new registrants on the list of eligible voter, representing 0.51%.

Further breakdown shows that the category has Albinism with 184 representing 30.36%, while those with physical impediment recorded 113 representing 18.65%; People with Austism recorded 15 (2.48%); down syndrome has 11 person, representing (1.82%). Those with blindness are 59 representing 9.74%, people with little stature has 69 representing 11.39%.
Also, those with cognitive learning has 9 representing 1.49%; those with spinal cord injury 4 representing 0.66%.

People with deafness recorded 60 representing 9.90% and other categories recorded 82 newly registered voters representing 13 53%
