The Industrial Training Fund ITF and Chartered institute of project management of Nigeria CIPMN are partnering to change the face of skills acquisition in Nigeria with direct focus on artisanry practice across the country.

The Director General Industrial Training Fund, ITF Dr Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun gave data showing that the informal sector contributes about 60% to Nigeria’s GDP and the sector is dominated by artisans.

Ogun disclosed this during a collaboration between ITF and CIPMN on special certification for Nigerian artisans trained under the skill Up Artisan Program in Abuja.

He noted that this demography has been left unattended, unregulated and unsupervised over the years and the net effect is seen in the rampant level of quackery and sub-standard jobs they deliver to Nigerians who engage their services, the influx of foreign artisans from neighbouring countries and the poor remuneration artisans are paid for their services.

The DG stressed that, the players in this sector have over the years had to deal with grinding poverty while the overall growth of the sector has stunted.

The Registrar General Chartered institute of project management, CIPMN Henry Ifeanyi Mbadiwe said the project management element of this SUPA program for artisans will focus on imbibing in the artisans, especially in planning skills, so they can give a more accurate collection time.

According to him, “CIPMN has designed two curriculums for the Skill-UP Artisans initiative, A curriculum to train trainers who would be CIPMN certified trainers for
the Project Management for Artisan course, this will form part of the
body of skills required for the artisans”.

He added that there are curriculum and learning materials for the study of project
management for artisans designed to be relevant to all the artisans in their trade areas.
