NESREA Seals More Facilities In FCT

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA in Nigeria has again sealed another thirteen facilities in the Federal Capital Territory FCT for violation of the Agency regulations.

Last month the Agency seal fifteen facilities in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, for various forms of environment crimes.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja the nation’s capital after the exercise the Director General of the Agency Professor Aliyu Jauro said the facilities were shut down for failing to abate environmental concerns ranging from Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Audit (EA), Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Permit both in the Green and Brown Environment.

“A total of ten facilities in the green sector and three in the brown sector were sealed.” He said.

The Director General also noted that the Agency embarked on enforcement exercise to seal 13 recalcitrant facilities
inline with the Presidential Bond and as fall out of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s retreat in Kaduna, Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement was one of the Agency’s KPI for 2024.

“As part of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) mandate to ensure compliance as well as enforce compliance with extant Environmental Standards, Guidelines , Rules and Regulations in Nigeria, the Agency embarked on enforcement exercise to seal 13 recalcitrant facilities in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
On Friday, 15th March 2024, NESREA sealed a total of thirteen facilities in the FCT for various environmental crimes.” The DG explained.

Professor Jauro, further stressed that the Agency had followed due process in clamping down these facilities after exhausting all relevant communications in respect of their environmental status.

According to the Director General of NESREA, “It was observed that some of the facilities earlier sealed had broken the Federal Government seals, however, such facilities are to face punitive measures for their actions, the Agency frowns at the high level of non-compliance of facilities to environmental laws of the land and will go ahead to replicate enforcement in all states of the federation.”

Speaking on the sanctions he said sanctions will be determined by the offence committed by facilities.

He however appeals for more funding for the agency as this would help the agency to effectively carryout their jobs.

The Agency Director Partnership and Education, Mrs. Bintu Kolo Mohammed urged the media to work and collaborate with the agency to educate and enlighten the general public particularly on the activities of the environment.

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA has the responsibility for the protection and development of the environment biodiversity and conservation and sustainable development of Nigeria natural resources in general and environmental technology including coordination,and liaison with relevant stakeholders within and outside Nigeria on matters of enforcement of environmental standards regulations, rules, laws, policies and guidelines.
