FG breaks ASUU, presents letters to two  rival bodies, CONUA, NAMDA

The Federal Government has divided the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige Tuesday announced the approval of the two unions, namely Congress of Nigerian University Academics and National Association of Medical and Dental Academics.

Ngige said that the two new trade unions will exist side by side with ASUU.

He stressed that the two unions are entitled to all rights and privileges existing in the university.

The recognition of the two union is coming admist the lingering strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities since 14 February 2022.

 Ngige cited Section 40 of the Constitution, which gives every individual the right to Freedom of Association.

Besides, the minister said the presentation of the letters to the new unions is in discharge of his mandate in the management of Employment Relationships and the Administration of Trade Unions to ensure harmonious industrial relations system in the nation.

He said CONUA applied for registration since 2018/and cited irreconcilable differences with ASUU while  NAMDA

 also applied under various groups.

He said both groups posited that they do not believe in recurring strikes as the solution to every welfare agitation.
