The Rivers State University said it has gotten approval for the award of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, disclosed this during a media briefing in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
Okogbule said the approval followed the result of an accreditation carried out by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria on the institution’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery MBBS degrees programme and the accreditation of the National Universities Commission.
“I am happy to inform you that based on the accreditation visit of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria on our programme between 30th and 31st March 2021 our College of Medical Sciences has been given approval for the training of medical students for the MBBS programme.
“The Council also approved the increase of our admission quota from 50 to 100. This is a rare feat for a new Medical College and it is in recognition of enormous infrastructural facilities and personnel engagement done by the Rivers State Government under the able leadership of Governor Nyesom Wike,” he stated.
Okogbule further said in respect of the NUC accreditation which was carried out in April 2021, 16 of the 23 programmes presented for the exercise received full accreditation, while seven receive interim accreditation status.
“No programme from the University was denied accreditation by the National Universities Commission and our percentage score in the exercise was 72.7 per cent,” the VC added.
