The move by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) to remove House Officers and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) doctors from the scheme of service has not gone down well with the Nigerian doctors, NewsSpecng learnt.

The doctors under the umbrella body of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) at their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Benin City, Edo State from the 22nd to 28th August, 2021, expressed its displeasure  over the status of the Circulars, which has become an issue of Contention.

The Council meeting with the theme, “Medical Practice in the face of National Insecurity: Implications for Nigerian Healthcare Indices,” also frowned against the appointment of Consultant Pharmacists.

NMA NEC in a communique issued at the end of the council meeting also urged the Federal Government to immediately withdraw the circular stopping salary payment for doctors in academics.

The unions described the circular as provocative.

The communique reads in part” “ Furthermore, the Council observed as provocative the stoppage of salary payment for doctors in academics using the CONMESS scale and firmly rejects these Circulars once again and advises the OHCSF to take immediate steps to withdraw them

“ Council noted with displeasure the Circular removing House Officers and NYSC doctors from the Scheme of Service,” it stated.

“It further notes the deleterious effect of the implication of the appointment of Consultant Pharmacists without specific job description and clear definition of roles in the Nigeria’s health system, which it describes as a recipe for conflagration which will affect patient care as well as wipe away harmonious inter-professional relationship in the public health sector.

“ Furthermore, the Council observed as provocative the stoppage of salary payment for doctors in academics using the CONMESS scale and firmly rejects these Circulars once again and advises the OHCSF to take immediate steps to withdraw them.”
