Female graduate dumps teaching for ‘keke’ driving
Tricycle riding in the country is believed to be a male dominated transport business.
However, in recent time the perception is gradually changing with the emergence of ladies coming in stronger.
Only recently, a young graduate who was painfully employed decided to venture into the trade. The young lady (name withheld) who graduated from the University of Calabar traded her teaching Job for tricyle job.
For her, the teaching job she took on after graduation could no longer put food on her table and the only way she could meet her expenses without cutting corners was to take the “keke” driving.
She said the pay from the teaching job was inadequate, so she decided to be a tricycle operator.
The young lady who is an Indigene of Imo state said driving the Keke so far pays better than a teaching job.
While discussing with one of her passengers who was impressed by her spoken English, she said “I am a graduate of physiology from the university of Calabar, i am from imo state.”
When asked why she chooses to drive keke, she said “I was actually teaching in a private school, so i got tired of their treatment and the pay was very very poor, i then said let me try this Keke business and see if i will be gaining better, “keke work better pass teaching work by far”.
She added that she is not married, and most ladies are encouraged to do the same business.
