NPC commences demarcation of LGA

The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced demarcation of enumeration areas across the country ahead of the next head count, NewsSpecng learnt.

The eseence of the demarcation is to arrange the area into smaller unit for ease of coverage during the actual enumeration exercise.

NPC, it was also learnt is still awaiting proclamations from the president to commence the national enumeration.

Nigeria is due for another head count. The last time there was a head count in the country was in 2006. The country has been due for another census since 2016. The 2006 census put the total population of the country as 140, 431,790. This figure is made up of male: 71,345,488 while female is 69,086,302.

Currently, the country’s estimated population is said to be in region of 208,832,577 as of Wednesday, January 13, 2021, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.

Nigeria 2020 population is estimated at 206,139,589 people at mid year according to UN data. The country’s population is equivalent to 2.64% of the total world population. Nigeria is ranked number 7 in the list of countries (and dependencies) by population. The population density in Nigeria is 226 per Km2 (586 people per mi2). On the other hand, the total land area of the country is 910,770 Km2 (351,650 sq. miles) with 52.0 % of the population is urban(107,112,526 people in 2020).

NewsSpecng gathered that the demarcation exercise is ongoing.

Sources in the Commission revealed that the exercise is carried out in two Local Government Areas in each of the 36 states and FCT.

The sources said the exercise is in line with the powers given to the Commission by the Act, eatablishing it.

However, the sources failed to disclose the criteria used in selecting the two Local Government Areas in each of the states.
