The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the promotion of 471 junior staff across its offices nationwide, in line with its commitment to staff welfare and merit-based career progression.

The approval was given during the Commission’s weekly meeting held Thursday and chaired by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, where ongoing preparations for key elections were also reviewed, including the Anambra State Governorship election, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, and party primaries ahead of the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections.

According to the Commission, a total of 515 staff were shortlisted for the 2025 promotion exercise. Following recommendations by the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (APDC), 471 staff were successfully elevated:
• 214 promoted to Grade Level (GL) 07
• 134 promoted to GL06
• 106 promoted to GL05
• 17 promoted to GL04

This marks the completion of the first phase of the promotion exercise, which focused on junior staff (GL03–06).

The promotion of senior staff, the Commission confirmed, has already commenced and will be concluded soon.

INEC emphasized that staff promotion is a routine and merit-driven exercise, reaffirming its dedication to building a motivated workforce capable of delivering credible elections.

In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, mni, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission urged staff to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, especially as the electoral calendar intensifies.

“The Commission remains committed to regular merit-based promotion and the welfare of staff. We urge all staff to rededicate themselves to service, particularly with regard to elections and electoral activities,” Olumekun said.

The development comes at a critical time, with INEC stepping up preparations for several high-stakes elections in 2026 and beyond.

By prioritizing staff welfare and career development, the Commission hopes to strengthen institutional efficiency and ensure the smooth conduct of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
